I can’t talk. I need to think.

“Not now.” Brody ran a hand through his hair. “We’ve got to get back to the truck so we can drive to Monocath Mountain. After all I witnessed, it’s the most logical place for the Mangler to hold Robbie.”

What he’d heard was insane. What he saw unbelievable.

If he hadn’t been there to see the transformation ritual for himself, he would never have believed it. Even now it was difficult to comprehend.

How did two groups of immortals exist in complete secrecy from the rest of the world?

By learning to blend into the human race. He’d never look at people in the same way again. How could he serve the public when at any given time he could be up against an immortal who could easily kill him?

He glanced back at Megan. He’d never think of her in the same way either. She was strikingly beautiful in human form and magnificent as the Talgorian Griffin. But she isn’t human, she’s immortal, which changes everything.

She walked with her head down. He could only imagine how the transformation affected her. To feel her body change into a mythological creature must have been traumatic. Or exhilarating.

Words wouldn’t even begin to make her feel better. He didn’t know how to comfort her. She’d been alone in the world since they broke up, making a life for their son with the only gift she thought she had. He could no longer blame her for keeping Robbie a secret. Her parents pushed her away, he’d pushed her away and the only one who had been there for her through it all was a shapeshifting Talgorian Guardian.

How could I have been such a jerk?

As much as he hated to admit it, the problem was his. He was the one who couldn’t deal with this, not Megan.

She’d done everything asked of her without the slightest hesitation. Sure she’d wanted reasons and he could tell she really didn’t want to undress in front of him but she’d complied.

It had nearly been his undoing.

He hadn’t been prepared for the memories seeing her naked brought to the surface. Days of crazy lovemaking in any private spot they could find. He’d never been able to get enough of her. He kept seeing her standing naked in the cave with nothing more than a blush on her face, knowing he was inspecting her from head to toe. Even in her embarrassment she hadn’t tried to cover herself or look away. It made him want her more.

How could he accept Megan’s immortality and ability to shapeshift into a huge Griffin? If he could only wrap his mind around the whole situation and figure it out. Everything he believed in, truth, justice and humanity, had been thrown right out of the window in the past few hours.

The path curved alongside the mountain. Moonlight cast eerie shadows against a cliff on one side and a ravine on the other.

“Megan, be careful through here. It’s getting narrow,” he called over his shoulder.
